Backend Engineer (Python)

Nettle is a fast-growing, VC-backed insurtech building one of the most compelling real-world applications of AI: transforming how commercial insurers assess risk – 5x faster, more consistently, and at far greater scale than ever before.
We have strong product-market fit and are scaling quickly:
£2m pre-seed raised in 2025; £4.8m oversubscribed Seed round closed in August 2026, led by a tier-1 specialist insurtech fund
Six-figure annual revenue with eight figures in active pipeline
Working with tier-1 global carriers, including Allianz, as well as specialty and regional carriers across Europe and the US
Insurtech of the Year 2025 (Finance Awards) and European Insurtech of the Year 2025 (Guidewire Awards)
Founding team with experience from McKinsey and QuantumBlack
About the Role
Nettle is building the AI platform that’s redefining how the world’s largest commercial insurers assess and manage risk. Risk surveyors collect photos, audio, and documents on-site; our AI pipelines process that evidence and draft the risk assessment reports that used to take days of manual work. We are live in production with enterprise carriers, and the backend is where all of it happens.
We’re hiring a Backend Engineer to build the engine room: the Django APIs, data models, and async AI pipelines that turn raw site evidence into finished reports. You’ll work directly with our CTO and a small engineering team, shipping to production constantly. No layers, no ticket factory – you’ll own features end to end and see them used by real surveyors within days.
What You’ll Accomplish
Own backend features end-to-end. From data model to API to production, you design it, build it, ship it, and monitor it. Nothing gets handed off halfway.
Build the AI pipelines at the heart of the product. Our evidence-processing and report-writing pipelines run asynchronously through Celery. You’ll extend them, harden them, and make them faster and more reliable as volume scales.
Ship LLM-powered features that actually work in production. Prompt design, structured outputs, confidence handling, evaluation – you’ll integrate AI models into workflows that enterprise insurers depend on.
Keep quality high while moving fast. Tested, reviewable, maintainable code. You raise the bar for the codebase, not just add to it.
Use AI to scale yourself. We run lean and use AI tools daily to operate at a level that shouldn’t be possible for a team our size. If you’re already working with Claude, Cursor, or similar, you’ll fit right in.
What We’re Looking For
Must-haves:
3+ years of professional backend experience with strong Python
Solid grasp of relational databases and API design – you can model a complex domain cleanly
Experience with async task queues (Celery or similar) in production
Pragmatic and self-directed – you ship things and communicate clearly in English
Nice-to-haves:
TypeScript/React – you can make frontend changes when a feature needs it
Experience integrating LLMs or AI models into production systems
Django specifically
How We Work
We’re a small team that ships fast and holds each other to a high bar. We use AI tools daily to move faster than teams 5x our size. This role is fully remote from Poland on a B2B contract, working closely with our London-based team.
Compensation & Benefits
20,000–27,000 PLN/month + VAT, depending on experience
B2B contract, fully remote (Poland)
Interview Process
Screening (30 min) – a technical conversation with one of our engineers about your background and experience
Culture + background (45 min) – a deeper conversation with our CTO about your career, your experience, and how you work
Take-home technical assessment (a few hours async + 30 min discussion) – a short piece of real technical work, followed by a conversation walking through your results and output
Paid trial week (1 week, paid) – work with us on real problems for a week, the best way for both sides to know it’s a fit
Ready to Join?
If you want real ownership over the backend of a production AI platform used by the world’s biggest insurers, we’d love to hear from you.
