Risk engineers are the cornerstone of commercial underwriting, providing invaluable expertise for multi-million-dollar decisions through meticulous surveys and detailed reports. Despite their critical role, these unsung heroes are at max capacity and drowning in inefficient processes.

Enter nettle: our agentic software platform completely re-thinks the risk engineering process - cutting days of manual work down to minutes, and supercharging teams to 5x their assessment output.

The Role

We’re already working with major global insurers and growing fast. Now we’re looking for someone exceptional to take the product to the next level.

As a member of the founding team (employee #6), you will work directly with the founders and our world-class engineering team to build features and improve outcomes for our customers. Your input will extend beyond just the product, you will shape our technical foundation, engineering culture and decision making processes.

As a founding engineer, you'll wear multiple hats and have end-to-end ownership of our technical infrastructure. We are working with long-standing industry giants, so you will need to be agile and client-focused.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and ship AI features, working closely with founders

• Creating a great user experience that delights our customers

• Drive critical decisions with your expert opinion grounded in years of experience

• Establish development processes across the team that 10x our output and work experience

• Help us build a bigger team by interviewing new engineering team members

• Drive your own work-stream and product roadmaps

• Get to know our users, using their feedback to drive improvements in the product

Who We're Looking For

• Higher Education (BSc, MSc, PhD) and/or research background

• 7+ years of software engineering experience

• Strong Python back-end expertise and understanding of web frameworks, such as Flask and Django

• Strong front-end expertise (JavaScript/TypeScript + modern frameworks)

• Detail oriented, hard-working and excited to seize a career-defining opportunity

• Experience building products from scratch and deploying these to real users

• Comfortable with rapid iteration and changing requirements

• Hands-on scale-up experience - taking early stage startups through their growth journey

• Desire to work in-person 4 days per week

Technical Background

• Expert in Python and Flask/Django web frameworks

• Extensive experience with React/NextJS ecosystem

• Strong TypeScript/JavaScript fundamentals

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and bare-metal server deployments

• Knowledge of database design and optimisation

• Understanding of security best practices

• Experience with CI/CD and DevOps practices

• Most recent work involves integrations with LLMs or builindg agentic workflows
