Senior Engineer

London

Nettle is a fast-growing, VC-backed insurtech building one of the most compelling real-world applications of AI: transforming how commercial insurers assess risk – 5x faster, more consistently, and at far greater scale than ever before.

We have strong product-market fit and are scaling quickly:

  • £2m pre-seed raised in 2025; £4.8m oversubscribed Seed round closed in August 2026, led by Project A, with angels from Allianz, AXA, and SwissRe

  • Six-figure annual revenue with eight figures in active pipeline

  • Live production deployments with major global insurers across Europe, the US, and the Middle East, including tier-1 carriers like Allianz

  • Insurtech of the Year 2025 (Finance Awards) and European Insurtech of the Year 2025 (Guidewire Awards)

  • Founding team with experience from McKinsey and QuantumBlack

About the Role

We’re hiring a Senior Engineer to help take our AI-powered risk engineering platform to the next level. Risk engineers are the backbone of multi-million-pound underwriting decisions, but they’re drowning in manual processes. Our agentic platform cuts days of work down to minutes, and we’re live in production with some of the world’s largest insurance organisations.

This isn’t a “build features in isolation” role. You’ll ship AI-powered product end to end, own enterprise client relationships during deployments and PoCs, and shape the technical foundation of the company. Your day might go from pairing on an agentic workflow in the morning to walking a client’s infosec team through a security review after lunch. You’ll work directly with our CTO, our founding engineers, and our CEO, side by side in our Shoreditch office.

What You’ll Accomplish

Ship AI features that work in production. Agentic workflows, LLM integrations, evaluation – you’ll build and ship AI-powered product from prototype to production, and you’re already fluent with AI coding tools as a core part of how you work.

Own the client-facing side of engineering. You’ll represent the engineering team in enterprise settings: leading PoCs, navigating security reviews with IT and infosec teams, and building trust with the people who buy and use what you build.

Shape the technical foundation. Strong Python backend work (Django/Flask), solid database design, Docker and production infrastructure – you’ll make the decisions that the platform is built on for years.

Close the loop between customers and product. You’ll turn field observations and customer pain points into shipped improvements, sitting at the boundary of engineering and delivery.

Use AI to scale yourself. We run lean and use AI tools daily to operate at a level that shouldn’t be possible for a team our size.

What We’re Looking For

Must-haves:

  • 3+ years building production Python web applications (Django, Flask, or FastAPI) at product-driven companies

  • Hands-on experience shipping LLM-powered features or agentic workflows in production – you’ll be productive on our AI stack from day one

  • Comfortable across the full stack: you’ve built and maintained both backend APIs and React/Next.js frontends

  • Experience representing engineering in client-facing settings: PoCs, onboarding, security reviews, or working directly with enterprise IT and infosec teams

  • Strong database design and optimisation skills (PostgreSQL, Redis) and comfort with Docker, CI/CD, and debugging production infrastructure

  • Early-stage startup experience – you’ve built products from scratch in resource-constrained environments – balanced with exposure to how well-run engineering teams operate

  • Based in the UK with valid work rights (sponsorship available for those already here on a visa)

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience in insurance, fintech, or other regulated industries where reliability and compliance standards are high

  • Experience with multiple LLM providers and an understanding of the trade-offs between them

  • Open source contributions, technical writing, or talks

How We Work

We’re a small team that operates with high trust and high ownership. We use AI tools daily to move faster than teams 5x our size. We’d rather ship something imperfect today than plan something perfect for next quarter. You’ll be in the office 4 days a week at our Shoreditch space, working side by side with the people building the company.

Benefits

  • Employee options in a category-defining, VC-backed startup

  • Top-tier office in Shoreditch with great coffee, brand new gym, and generous perks

  • Weekly team lunches, learning budget, regular offsites, and full health and pension benefits

Interview Process

  1. Screening (30 min) – a technical conversation with one of our founding engineers about your background and experience

  2. Technical deep-dive (60 min) – a second conversation with another of our founding engineers on system design, technical judgment, and real-world problem-solving

  3. Take-home technical assessment (2–3 hours async + 30 min review) – a practical task on a realistic version of our platform, followed by a review of your decisions with our CTO

  4. Final round, in person (90 min) – at our Shoreditch office: a 60-minute system design challenge with our CTO based on a realistic client deployment scenario, followed by a 30-minute culture conversation
